My home is your home’: Make your house a source of income

earn from your home
Mi casa es su casa is a Spanish phrase most of us are familiar with. It means ‘my home is your home’ and demonstrates the inherent generosity prevalent in many cultures, ours included. However, when times are tough and every penny counts, there’s nothing wrong with sharing aspects of your home with others – for a price. Why not make the most of your investment? Read on to see how you can make some extra money from your property.
Storage solutions
Do you enjoy a clutter-free lifestyle? Are you super organised? Well, the good news for you is that most people are not. Therefore, if you have extra storage space in your home, you can always offer it to someone for a small fee (just make sure their trunks do not have human corpses in them…I’m kidding!).
You can charge a monthly or annual fee to store items in your home that others cannot fit into theirs. Ensure that the items they are bringing in are kept safe. Also, make sure you are available when they want to access their storage. You can set a timetable for this purpose.
Let out your lawn
If you are blessed enough to have a large lawn or ample outdoor space, you’re in luck. You can rent out this area for parties, or even weddings. This can be a cash cow because we all know about the never-ending wedding season!
Helpful tip: Generally, you may want to charge a bit less than banquet halls and other areas. However, this depends on the calibre of your property. If you are offering a much better arrangement compared to anywhere else, feel free to charge a premium!
Car parking
Four cars in one household is a common feature of contemporary times. And yet, multiple vehicles bring with them a host of problems, such as not enough parking space.  This is rather aggravating. If you have a large garage, you can rent out parking space to people who need it.
However, if you decide to do this, make sure you offer a secure area. Lock your gate at night and try to install a security system. It is your responsibility to ensure that their cars do not get damaged while parked in your property. Similarly, you must also care for your own security, especially at night, in case someone enters your property during later hours to access or park their car.
Room rent
Don’t fret if none of the ideas mentioned above suit you. Go old-school and take in a paying guest instead. You can rent out extra bedrooms in your home and even offer meal plans. If you choose your guest carefully, you will not only make extra money but enjoy some great company! You never know, the friendship might last you a lifetime. Of course, you may also end up with a monster who you want to evict as soon as possible … where life offers opportunities, it also poses risks!
Lights, camera, action!
Here’s the last, most glamorous option. You can offer your property to a production house to use in their upcoming film, drama, music video, or photo shoot. While you may think opportunities are scarce, with the number of productions taking place nowadays, there’s a good chance someone is looking for the type of space you own. Production houses often offer a substantial fee, but please note that this will probably not be a permanent source of income.
And there you go – unique, implementable ideas to earn extra money from your property. Although some of these may seem a bit far-fetched to you, they are really being used as a means of income by people all over the world.
You will never know until you give it a go. Good luck!
